Midfielder Donnie van de Beek will play for Manchester United at number 34, he said club official website.
Donny took this number as a sign of solidarity with his friend Abdelhak Nuri, with whom he played alongside Ajax youth teams. Nuri in a friendly match against Werder Bremen suffered irreversible brain damage, for which he was in a coma for more than a year. Nuri will no longer be able to play and is in a wheelchair.
Previously, the number 34 belonged to goalkeeper Dean Henderson, who returned from a loan to Sheffield United, but agreed to resign.
Like van de Beek, number 34 when moving to the new club was taken by other Ajax alumni: Justin Kluivert in Rome, Joel Veltman in Brighton and Amin Younes in Napoli.
Jonathan Greening, Phil Bardsley, and Andres Lindegor ranked 34th since the numbers were introduced in 1993/94.
