According to Reuters, a small contingent of the US military will remain alone in the Somali capital, Mogadishu.
President Donald Trump ordered the withdrawal of the US military from Somalia. This was reported on December 4 by Reuters, citing a Pentagon statement.
There are now about 700 American soldiers in the African country. His main task was to assist the local army and law enforcement officials in conducting operations against the Al-Shabaab group, associated with the terrorist organization Al-Qaeda.
According to the agency, little attention was paid to the US mission in Somalia, but it is “the cornerstone of the Pentagon’s global efforts to combat al-Qaeda.” The withdrawal of troops, experts interviewed by Reuters, may undermine security in the African state.
The exact number of troops who left Somalia has not been disclosed. A Pentagon interlocutor, on condition of anonymity, said that almost all the military would be withdrawn from the country (some of them would be transferred to neighboring countries), and only a small contingent would remain in the capital of Mogadishu.
Somalia is located on the east coast of Africa, on the peninsula of the same name. Since 1988, a civil armed conflict has continued in the country.
