US senators ask Ukraine for help in the military sphere

A group of US senators has drafted a law on security assistance and strategic support to Ukraine. The Office of the President responded to this that the country highly values ​​this initiative.

A statement on the document, submitted by members of the Republican and Democratic parties, was posted on the website of the US Foreign Office.

Senators John Barrasso, Gene Shaheen, Jim Risch, Bob Menendez, Rob Portman became the authors of the bill.

As Risch said, Russia illegally seized Crimea seven years ago and launched a campaign of secret military support for terrorists in eastern Ukraine.

“Despite Russia’s blatant disregard for international laws and obligations, Ukraine remains a loyal partner of the United States and resists Russia’s malicious influence in Europe. I am proud to reintroduce this law today to demonstrate the continued support of the United States. United States to the people of Ukraine and the country’s transition to democracy, ”said the senator.

Please note that the draft law of the Law on Security Association of Ukraine provides:

  • proposals for diplomatic support to Ukraine;

  • the appointment of a special US envoy for Ukraine, who would also act as a mediator in the Normandy format negotiations;

  • the annual allocation of military aid to the country in the amount of up to $ 300 million, including the supply of lethal weapons;

  • up to 4 million per year for the training of Ukrainian officers;

  • speed up the transfer of surplus defensive items to Ukraine, etc.

The legislative initiative was praised on the Facebook page of the office of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

“The possible provision of additional funds for the defense sector of Ukraine will help to improve the training, armament and material and technical support of the army and will accelerate the transition of the Ukrainian army to NATO standards,” the press service said.
