The United States of America has strengthened its military presence in Syria after several skirmishes with Russian forces that have exacerbated tensions in the country. These steps should be a signal to Russia, writes the BBC, citing US officials familiar with the situation.
The command sent six Bradley fighting vehicles and about 100 troops to northeast Syria.
US Navy Capt. Bill Urban said the move “will ensure the safety of coalition forces.”
According to him, the United States does not seek a conflict with any other Syrian country, but will, if necessary, protect the coalition forces.
Urban described the actions of the Russian military as “deliberately provocative and aggressive” in a comment to the US channel NBC News.
Captain of the US Navy condemned the misconduct and lack of professionalism of the Russian army in Syria. He cited the example of an incident in which a Russian ground patrol entered the security zone of eastern Syria, where “they were not allowed to be”.
Russian and American armored vehicles collided in Syria on August 25. Several US servicemen were injured. US officials believe the Russian military committed the accident on purpose.
The Pentagon said Russian forces violated agreements to resolve conflicts in Syria and injured US military personnel due to their aggressive and provocative behavior. The Russian military responded by saying that the US military, despite the agreements, tried to block the movement of the Russian patrol.
The military conflict in Syria has been going on since 2011. Syrian government troops, rebels, radical Islamists, Kurds, militants of the Islamic State, as well as the armed forces of the Russian Federation, the United States, Iran and Turkey participated in hostilities in different moments.
