“The greatest external threat to the United States in the medium and long term comes from the Chinese regime, the Chinese Communist Party, led by Secretary General Xi Jinping,” he said.

The head of the State Department also pointed to China’s dependence on Middle East energy resources. In this regard, Beijing is expanding its influence in the Indian Ocean, which carries risks for Europe and the Middle East, he stressed.
