New US sanctions against Nord Stream 2 could turn the pipeline into a $ 10 billion monument on the Baltic seabed.

The new sanctions, which are foreseen in the defense budget project for 2021, will affect all companies that in any way get involved in the pipe laying works. In addition, the sanctions will be extended to companies that decide to take out insurance or certify participants in Nord Stream 2.
“The most interesting here are two bureaucratic traps that the United States has prepared for the Russians: insurance and certification. This happened in the civilized world, without insurance, a ship will not enter a port. And with a new package of sanctions, no major organization will provide such services to the project. ” , – explains Zerkal.
Note that the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline was stopped at the end of 2019. Then, the United States adopted sanctions against all companies that will be engaged in laying pipes for Russia. International companies refused to cooperate with the Russian project and Gazprom had to look for an opportunity to complete the construction on its own.
As early as 2021, the United States may adopt sanctions against insurance and certification companies that want to work with Nord Stream 2. This means that if Gazprom can complete the construction of the pipeline itself, it will not be possible to start it up.
