German company Alpina, which has official status as a car maker, began its program to finalize the new BMW 3 treshka last fall with the B3 gasoline model. Such cars are sold in many countries around the world, and it was important for developers to launch their “three rubles” on the market before the BMW M3 factory. And now it is the turn of the diesel version, whose main markets will traditionally be Germany and Austria.
The BMW Alpina D3 S sedan and station wagon are created on the basis of production models of the BMW M340d, which were released only last winter. Furthermore, the differences, at first glance, are not so many. The three-cylinder B57 six-cylinder turbodiesel is powered quite sparingly, with standard 340 hp. and 700 Nm at 355 hp and 730 Nm. But Alpina engineers significantly expanded the torque “shelf”: if a standard engine peaks in the 1750–2250 rpm range, then an Alpina engine has 1750–2750 rpm. The diesel engine has become higher torque at medium speeds, and the car has become more torque: everything is in accordance with the traditional philosophy of the company.
Additionally, the BMW Alpina D3 S is the company’s first model, which has a belt-starting generator. It produces 11 hp, aids in the first few seconds of acceleration and works as part of a start-stop system. In the transmission, a modified eight-speed “automatic”, four-wheel drive with a reinforced front axle clutch and an electronically controlled rear differential lock.
The suspension of diesel cars is exactly the same as that of gasoline cars, with adaptive dampers, Eibach springs and thicker stabilizers. And the brakes are borrowed from the previous B5 model: four-piston mechanisms with 395mm diameter discs on the front axle and single-piston mechanisms with 345mm discs at the rear. Alpina regularly equips cars with adaptive steering gears.
All the technical bells and whistles affected the mass: the BMW Alpina D3 S sedan in a running state with a driver pulling 1950 kg versus 1895 kg for the base model BMW M340d xDrive. Therefore, acceleration to “hundreds” in two cars takes the same 4.6 s. The truck does this exercise in 4.8 s. However, Alpina does not have a speed limiter, so the top speed is 273 km / h (270 for the truck) versus 250 for the factory model.
Diesel Alpina has the same visual differences from a regular BMW as gasoline: these are brand-name 19 or 20-inch diameter bumper covers and wheels to choose from. For the new generation, the grill in the “nostrils” was also replaced: it is the same as the younger versions of the “treshka”. The mandatory list of enhancements includes “adapted” instrument cluster graphics (background color and modified fonts) and shift paddles for the Switch-Tronic shift switch. As always, for a surcharge, we offer a complete interior remodel with delicate Lavalina leather.
If a regular BMW M340d sedan in Germany costs from € 64550, then the BMW Alpina D3 S is estimated to be at a minimum of € 70,500. The truck is still 1,400 euros more expensive. The company is already taking orders, but the supply of “three rubles” diesel will start only in November.
