Unknown hidden structure found within the Earth’s core

The inner core of the Earth turned out to be double. In this case, one of the layers has an unknown structure.

This conclusion was made by scientists at the Australian National University, reports the Daily Mail.

Previously, it was believed that the Earth has four layers: crust, mantle, outer core and inner core, but now scientists have shown the presence of a fifth layer, which is located in the center of the planet.

During the study, the scientists noticed changes in the structure of iron in the inner core, indicating a new “boundary line” that extends about 650 km from the center of the Earth.

“This is very exciting and may mean that we will have to rewrite the textbooks!” – said the study’s lead author, Joanne Stevenson.

In their work, the researchers used data on the travel time of seismic waves within the Earth, obtained by the International Seismological Center. They then used their new data mining algorithm to find evidence of changes in the structure of the Earth’s innermost core.

Finding these small changes in the structure of iron turned out to be “especially difficult”, but they were able to demonstrate two separate cooling events in Earth’s history. This suggests that some previously unknown and dramatic event occurred sometime in the early years of Earth’s evolution, about 4.5 billion years ago.

“The details of this great event remain a mystery, but we have added another piece of the puzzle when it comes to our knowledge of the Earth’s inner core,” Stevenson added.

As OBOZREVATEL reported, scientists called life on Earth an accident.
