In Ukraine, it was allowed to change the patronymic from the age of 14.

From the age of 14, the consent of the parents will be required to change the patronymic, and from the age of 16, the child can do it on their own.

In Ukraine, it was allowed to change the patronymic from the age of 14. The bill on second reading was supported by 259 members of the Verkhovna Rada at a meeting on Tuesday, November 3.

Previously, it was possible to change the patronymic only if the father changed his name or if information about him as the father of the child was excluded from the record of his birth.

According to the new law:

  • it will be possible to change the middle name for people over 16 years old

  • Changing the middle name from the age of 14 is only possible with the consent of the parents;

  • if the guardianship of a 14-year-old child is established, it is possible to change the surname, first name and patronymic with the consent of the guardian;

  • if one of the parents is against changing the patronymic of the child, the matter can be decided by the guardianship and trusteeship authority or the court; At the same time, when resolving the controversy, the fulfillment by the parents of their duties in relation to the child and other circumstances that certify the correspondence of the patronymic change to the interests of the child are taken into account.

Recall that in 2014 another bill was registered in the Rada that allowed changing the patronymic. However, he was later rejected for flaws.

It was also reported that social guarantees for orphans in Ukraine were strengthened.
