Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy believes that the introduction of a “weekend quarantine” will reduce the dynamics of growth in the number of COVID-19 coronavirus infection cases.

The so-called “weekend quarantine”, which was introduced by Ukraine’s Cabinet of Ministers, is an opportunity to avoid a total blockade in the country, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in his video blog posted on Facebook on November 14. .

“Weekend in quarantine.” There are many discussions on this topic, although, in my opinion, everything is quite obvious: it can be supported or not, but one cannot help but understand why that decision was made: we have new records every day, [за последние сутки] – more than 12 thousand cases. It is necessary to reduce the dynamics of growth in the number of cases. Our doctors are heroically resisting the virus, but we must not be put into a situation where they have to choose who to treat, “he said.

The president noted that there are no “ideal tools” to reduce the number of cases.

“There are other painful ones and even more painful ones. For example, France, Germany, many other countries introduce total lockdowns, and this is even worse for the economy than a” weekend quarantine “. A” weekend quarantine “is an opportunity to avoid a complete closure. There is such a possibility, we must take advantage of it. In fact, we are talking about six days off, “he added.

An outbreak of COVID-19 coronavirus infection began in late 2019 in China. On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization declared the spread of the coronavirus a pandemic.

The quarantine in connection with the outbreak of coronavirus infection in Ukraine was introduced on March 12. On May 11 restrictions in the country were relaxed. On May 20, the Cabinet of Ministers introduced the so-called adaptive quarantine: regional authorities were given the right to independently weaken the restrictive measures, subject to compliance with a series of criteria. On October 13, the adaptive quarantine was extended until the end of 2020.

On November 11, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine decided to introduce a “weekend quarantine”. Ukraine’s Health Minister Maksim Stepanov explained that we are talking about three weekends, starting this weekend. According to him, the Ministry of Health would like to introduce a strict quarantine for three weeks, but the Ukrainian economy will not be able to do so.

“Day off quarantine” states that from 00:00 on Saturday to 00:00 on Monday in Ukraine, only grocery stores, pharmacies, transportation, gas stations and veterinary pharmacies will operate. Restaurants, cafes or other catering establishments will only operate takeout. “The weekend quarantine” will “stop the wave of coronavirus disease,” Stepanov said.

On November 12, authorities in several cities refused to impose strict restrictions; against quarantine, in particular, they spoke in Odessa, Cherkassy, Nikolaev, Rovno, Lutsk, Dnipro, Ivano-Frankovsk. Lviv Mayor Andrey Sadovy said the City Council will appeal the Cabinet’s decision. He called the Cabinet of Ministers decision “nonsense”.

The executive committees of the city of Lvov and Ivano-Frankivsk announced Saturdays and Sundays until November 30 in these cities as business days for catering establishments, shopping and entertainment centers, cultural institutions, gyms, fitness centers and markets. This frees these institutions from the need to comply with government requirements, according to city councils. The head of the Ministry of Health stressed that the decree refers to the days of the week, not the weekends.
