The European Union could declare Ukraine a candidate for membership in 2027. This goal is contained in the initiative of former Lithuanian Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius “Ukraine-2027”.
The Lithuanian ambassador Valdemaras Sarapinas announced this in an interview with Interfax-Ukraine.
According to him, the main objective of the Kubilius initiative is to unite the efforts of EU countries to help Ukraine in reforms and growth of its economy.
“During Lithuania’s second presidency of the EU Council, which will take place in 2027, the European Union may have already declared Ukraine a candidate for the EU,” Sarapinas said.
He noted that this would mobilize Ukraine on the issue of further democratic reforms.
“This is certainly an ambitious plan. For it to come true, it is important that Ukraine consolidate its successes and carry out reforms with determination going forward, and that the EU supports Ukraine’s European election in every way possible and consistently, “Sarapinas added.
He also said that in mid-2021, the fourth conference on reforms in Ukraine will be held in Vilnius.
We will recall, earlier, that President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Ukraine should not only become a member of the European Union, but be an equal member of it.
He also noted that Ukraine seeks to gain a clear and articulated perspective of EU membership.
