Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) Alexei Danilov promised that Ukraine will give a “decent response” to any action by Russia after the imposition of sanctions against the chairman of the political council of the Opposition Platform – Party for Life. Viktor Medvedchuk. He spoke about this in an interview with Ukrinform.
Danilov said that the NSDC is considering various scenarios for the reaction of the Russian side.
He also reacted to the worsening situation in Donbass, noting that this is a confirmation of Russia’s “direct attitude” towards the war.
“I am sure that our army is ready to resist the ‘aggressor country’ at any moment. And as for them (Russia – approx. “Lenta.ru”) plans to counter our active actions, we’ll see later. We are developing various scenarios and we will have a worthy response to any action by Russia. And not just the president, the Defense and National Security Council, but the entire Ukrainian people, ”Danilov said.
On February 26, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy convened an extraordinary meeting of the NSDC regarding “the need to make quick decisions on current issues of state security.”
At the previous meeting, the department decided to impose sanctions against Medvedchuk, his wife Oksana Marchenko and several people, including Russian citizens. In addition, restrictions were introduced against 19 legal entities associated with Medvedchuk and Marchenko. The reason for the imposition of the sanctions was an investigation by the Security Service of Ukraine into the financing of terrorism.
The Kremlin called the sanctions against Medvedchuk “alarming information”. Russian President Dmitry Peskov’s press secretary noted that the restrictions indicate Ukraine’s intention to end the war in Donbass by force.
Relations between Kiev and Moscow deteriorated dramatically after the reunification of Crimea with Russia in March 2014 and the outbreak of conflict in Donbass in April of the same year. Part of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions proclaimed independence. Kiev tried to return them by force, but to no avail. Ukraine accuses Russia of armed aggression and occupation of Crimea and the Donbass regions. The Kremlin rejects the claim.
