The signing of an agreement on a joint aviation space between Ukraine and the EU is expected in early 2021, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.
Ukraine and the European Union have not signed an agreement on a joint airspace. This is demonstrated by a joint statement by the leaders of the EU and Ukraine, published on the website of the European Council.
“We recall the importance and reaffirm our commitment to conclude an agreement on a single aviation space as soon as possible,” the document says.
The Common European Aviation Area allows the establishment of common safety standards and the liberalization of market relations in the field of aviation between the European Union and third countries.
During a post-summit press conference, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that the agreement would be signed in early 2021.
“As for aviation clearances, I’ll tell you honestly: my colleagues assured me today that we will finally do it early next year,” he said.
Evropeyskaya Pravda reported that Ukraine completed negotiations on a joint airspace with the EU in 2013, but the signing of the agreement was blocked due to the conflict between the UK and Spain over the status of Gibraltar airport (Gibraltar is an overseas territory of Great Britain, whose sovereignty is disputed by Spain) …
In June this year, the deputy head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, Igor Zhovkva, announced that the agreement is expected to be signed at the Ukraine-EU summit.
On October 6, the Ukraine-EU summit was held in Brussels. It became the first bilateral summit of the European Union with a partner country to be held in Brussels in a traditional “live” format since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
