Ukraine celebrates the day of victory over Nazism in World War II

Victory over Nazism Day in World War II is a state holiday and a day off in Ukraine, which replaced the Soviet Victory Day holiday in 2016.

Today, May 9, Ukraine celebrates Victory Day over Nazism in World War II.

The day of victory over Nazism in World War II is established in accordance with the law On the perpetuation of the victory over Nazism in the Second World War of 1939-1945. The celebration of Victory Day over Nazism includes a rethinking of the events of World War II, the destruction of Soviet historical myths, an honest dialogue on the complex pages of the past.

World War II for Ukraine began on September 1, 1939 with the Nazi German attack on Poland. On this day, German military planes bombed Lviv and other cities. On September 17, the Soviet Union became a participant in World War II on the side of Germany.

It should be noted that Ukraine, not only among the former Soviet republics, but also of all countries in the world, suffered the greatest losses during the years of that war. According to various estimates, 8 to 10 million people died in Ukraine, of which about 5 million were civilians, 2.2 million were forced into labor in Nazi Germany, and 10 million lost their refuge. More than 700 cities and urban settlements, almost 30 thousand villages became complete ruins.

Immigrants from Ukraine made a significant contribution to the victory over Nazism. On the side of the United Nations, they fought in the armies of Great Britain and Canada: 45 thousand people, Poland: 120 thousand, the USSR: about 6 million, the United States: 80 thousand and France 6 thousand, and in Ukraine itself there were approximately 100 a thousand people.

On this day, the memory of all those who fought against Nazism is venerated, the solidarity and militant brotherhood of all the United Nations, both the states and the stateless nations, are emphasized.

For several years, the official symbol of the celebration of Victory Day over Nazism in World War II has been the red poppy flower, the universally accepted symbol of memorable days.

The emphasis also shifted from the history of hostilities to the history of specific people, and the celebrations were abandoned in favor of memory.

This year, on the Day of Remembrance and Reconciliation on May 8 and the Day of Victory over Nazism in World War II on May 9, the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance begins indefinite action across Ukraine Family history of war. To participate in the action, Ukrainians are invited to post their story on any social media under the hashtag # RodinnііstorіїVіyni and add a photo of a family member whose story they are sharing to the text.

Almost 40% of Ukrainians are in favor of the celebration of May 8 and 9.
