Ukraine’s basketball team reached the European men’s championship ahead of schedule, which will be played next year in Georgia, Germany, Italy and the Czech Republic.
Ainars Bagatskis’ team achieved this right by beating the Austrians in the most difficult match in the so-called Slovenian bubble: 70:67.

“Yellow-blues” started the fight without much confidence, without coming from good positions. However, closer to the middle of the first quarter, the Ukrainians felt their game, while acting quite confidently on defense. At the end of the third minute, Alexander Lipovy implemented a long-range shot and put the team ahead – 8: 5.
Oleksandr Mishula and Vitaliy Zotov carried out similar actions until the end of the period, but the opponents managed not to let the Ukrainians go ahead – 16:14.
The second quarter started 5-0 in just 50 seconds, forcing the opponent’s coach to take a time out. Vladimir Gerun played excellently on defense. The Austrians, due to active play under their shield, managed to create problems for our boys.
In the middle of the 10th minute, the Ukrainians missed the opponent’s jet at 0:10, leading the Austrians to end the first half in their favor – 29:30.
During the break, Ainars Bagatskis found the right words for his players. The Ukrainians started the second half with energy with an impressive 10: 2. This moment allowed the “yellow-blue” to feel more secure on the ground, but the opponent kept “biting”, again and again making attempts from under the shield.
At the end of the meeting, the teams exchanged precise long-range attempts: 50:45.
In the decisive 10 minutes, the Austrians managed to even the score already in the second minute, and the Ukrainians had won five fouls at that point. “Yellow-blues” managed to leave the lead by five points, but the Austrians immediately recovered – 59:58.
In the end, everything was decided in the last nervous seconds, which our team completed in their favor.

“I won’t say it was very easy for me to watch this game. You should make fewer mistakes, especially without pressure. The way we handle the ball sometimes explains why we had so few attacks. We made the wrong decisions out of nowhere.” We were not surprised at all. They tried to slow down the pace of the game, they got into zone defense. We need to analyze why we lost the ball in such simple situations. It is inexplicable, “said Ukrainian mentor Ainars Bagatskis.
As OBOZREVATEL reported, the Hungarian national team was forced out of the “bubble” in Slovenia due to the outbreak of the coronavirus in the team.
