Ukraine and the United States discussed cooperation in the defense sector
The Office of the President suggested that Washington develop a draft agreement on defense cooperation.
On Wednesday, December 23, the deputy director of the Office of the President of Ukraine, Roman Mashovets, held a meeting with the United States Charge d’Affaires in Ukraine, Christina Queen, during which development plans in this direction were outlined for the next year and future prospects. The results of bilateral cooperation in 2020 were also summarized, according to the OP’s press service.
It is noted that Mashovets proposed to start developing a draft bilateral framework agreement on defense cooperation. The document should cover all areas of cooperation between Ukraine and the United States in this area, including defense reform, in particular the personnel policy system, the development of combat capabilities of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the comprehensive support and arming of troops, reform of the military-industrial complex, training of military units, military education, science and development. defense technologies, treatment and rehabilitation of wounded military personnel, social protection of veterans, military personnel and their families, mutual participation in international cooperation formats and other important issues for Ukraine’s defense capacity.
Kristina Kvin noted the large volume of developments in the defense industry and noted the importance of Ukraine joining NATO’s Enhanced Opportunities Program, which should start operating next year. He reaffirmed the willingness of the United States to continue providing assistance to develop Ukraine’s defense capabilities and to process new formats of bilateral cooperation.
The parties agreed next year to work to further develop the basis of the treaty between Ukraine and the United States on defense cooperation and to make efforts to effectively use American assistance to the Ukrainian defense forces, which is scheduled for 2021.
Summarizing the results of bilateral cooperation in 2020, in particular, the reform of the control system of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in accordance with the standards of the Alliance, the creation of the Intelligence Committee and the Ministry of Strategic Industries of Ukraine was noted. , changes in the list of military ranks of senior officers in accordance with the standards of the main NATO member states.
