On November 18, the Third Committee of the UN General Assembly adopted a draft resolution proposed by Russia on the fight against the glorification of Nazism. 122 countries voted in favor of the document, 53 abstained and two opposed: the United States and Ukraine.
TASS reports.
The full title of the resolution is “on the fight against the glorification of Nazism, neo-Nazism and other types of practices that contribute to the escalation of modern forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance”. More than two dozen states have become co-authors of the text.
The resolution expresses “deep concern about the glorification in any form of the Nazi movement, neo-Nazism and former members of the Waffen-SS, including the construction of monuments and memorials and public demonstrations to glorify the Nazi past, the Nazi movement and neo-Nazism. “.
Gennady Kuzmin, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN, noted in his speech that countries face the problem of glorifying Nazism today not only regularly, but constantly. According to him, the purpose of the document “is in no way to hold certain states to account.” The resolution focuses on cooperation and dialogue, Kuzmin explained.
The representative of the United States who took the floor said that his country highly values ”the heroism, contributions and sacrifices of the allied countries that defeated Nazi Germany in 1945.” However, at the same time, in his opinion, the draft resolution was “an attempt to legitimize disinformation on the part of Russia, which denigrates neighboring states under the cynical cover of the fight against the glorification of Nazism.”
“The United States reaffirms the constitutional right to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly and expression,” added the US diplomat.
In turn, the representative of Ukraine accused the authors of the resolution of “manipulating history”, “interfering in the internal affairs of states”, as well as “using the General Assembly as a tool for a state information campaign to cover up an aggressive international policy “.
Last year, the UN already adopted a Russian resolution against the glorification of Nazism. And it was not supported only by the United States and Ukraine.
Last winter, “Strana” reported that the Verkhovna Rada had received a bill prohibiting the glorification of Nazis and SS symbols. However, he remained in parliament.
