Qualifying is a key weekend at Mugello. Fast, medium speed turns without serious braking allowed for no fighting for position, and a good starting position almost guaranteed points at the end.

Traffic was a common problem. On a narrow track, the drivers already interfered with each other in Friday’s practice, and in qualifying it was important to start a fast lap on time.

At Mugello, a heavy load of tires, abrasive asphalt: for the first time after Silverstone and Barcelona, Pirelli chose the most resistant rubber. Compositions C1, C2 and C3 were used in the roles of Hard, Medium and Soft.

The soft tires wore out quickly, the hard tires were too stiff – the cars slipped and the medium tires performed very well over long distances, but were noticeably inferior to the soft ones in speed, so everyone used the soft in qualifying.

In all three practices, Valtteri Bottas showed the best time, ahead of his teammate.

Qualification at Mugello

In the first session cyclists tried to take turns exiting traffic, but there were still some minor issues.

On the first attempt, Valtteri Bottas led the protocol, completing a lap in 1: 15.749 and three hundredths ahead of his teammate. On the second attempt, nobody could improve the Finn’s result.

Of more fight they left: Magnussen, Latifi, Russell, Giovinazzi and the winner of the last race, Pierre Gasly.

In the second session Hamilton completed the lap in 1: 15.309 on the first attempt, one hundredth ahead of Bottas, and this result remained the best.

Lance Stroll was released from the Racing Point pits the moment Verstappen approached the pit lane; Max had to dodge it to avoid a collision.

Kvyat made a mistake on a fast lap, flying into the gravel. Norris, Raikkonen, Vettel and Grosjean did not make the top ten.

In the end Hamilton finished the first attempt in 1: 15.144, Bottas lost six hundredths, Verstappen four tenths.

As the drivers started the second attempt, yellow flags appeared: On the third lap after the start, Okon’s car came to a stop, ruining part of the fastest lap.

Lewis Hamilton won qualifying for Mugello, taking the seventh pole of the season and 95th of his career. Valtteri Bottas showed the second time: Mercedes again has the entire first row of the starting field.

Verstappen and Albon start from the second row, Leclair and Stroll from the third row. Perez, sixth-placed, will lose a starting position after yesterday’s Raikkonen incident.
