Zelensky did not recommend introducing a blockade in December
The president, in his video message, stated that he did not see the need for an immediate shutdown and did not recommend that the Cabinet of Ministers introduce a strict quarantine in December. He noted that the situation with the incidence is controlled, the weekend quarantine gave results and the incidence stopped growing rapidly.
Vladimir Zelensky also added that it would not be possible to completely avoid a blockade. there is the possibility of its introduction in January. However, even with the strengthening of the quarantine, the state border for Ukrainians will remain open.
It is possible to tighten the quarantine in early January
The Health Ministry has no plans to impose additional quarantine restrictions this month. As noted by the head of the department Maxim Stepanov, the medical system will withstand the load until the end of December, as the increase in new cases of the disease remains stable, without sharp jumps.
The Cabinet of Ministers hopes to spend December with the current restrictions on the “orange” zone throughout the country. According to the forecast of the Ministry of Health, at this time, an option is being developed to strengthen the quarantine no earlier than January. This was stated by Prime Minister Denis Shmygal.
Probable closing dates
There may be a significant increase in anti-epidemic measures in first days of January for a period of 3 weeks… The Ministry of Health explains the need for total quarantine during this period by the fact that in January-February there is a peak in the incidence of influenza.
A strict quarantine early in the month will reduce COVID-19 infection rates and ease the medical system ahead of the seasonal outbreak of a viral infection.
Previously, the probable dates for the strengthening of the quarantine were announced: January 2 to 23, 2021… According to sources at RBC-Ukraine, the government has not yet determined a specific deadline, but is considering the option of an enhanced quarantine, not a lockdown, as in January business activity is already dropping dramatically.
The list of quarantine restrictions will be released on December 9
A full list of possible restrictive measures will be announced during the next Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, December 9. According to Prime Minister Denis Shmygal, the question of tightening the quarantine in early January may be raised if the epidemiological situation worsens.
In addition, the head of the Cabinet of Ministers said that in a meeting with the mayors of the cities, they reached a consensus on the need to limit the activities of discos and nightclubs, catering establishments with leisure activities, hostels for the duration of improved quarantine.
More than 90% of the representatives of the local authorities support the restrictions to the work of the New Year’s fairs, shopping and entertainment centers, restaurants, cinemas and theaters.
When the quarantine is enforced, the transport will not stop
With the introduction of a blockade or an increase in quarantine, the new restrictions will not affect the operation of public transport.
The authorities are also not considering the possibility of banning rail and air traffic, interurban and international routes. The government noted that transportation is not the main source of the spread of coronavirus infection.
Quarantined New Years
Although the introduction of a lockdown is not planned before the New Year, winter holidays will be held with restrictions on public events.
There will be no concerts, entertainment shows, food courts in Kiev. Instead of traditional festivals, online broadcasts are organized. The Kiev city state administration reported that this year they refused to install a stage next to the Christmas tree in Sofiyskaya Square, they do not plan to block the city center.
In Lviv, they also decided to cancel large-scale celebrations during Christmas and New Years. However, various events will be held in small venues in a format adapted to quarantine conditions.
It was previously reported that local authorities support the Cabinet of Ministers proposal on a possible ban or partial restriction of the work of festive fairs and other massive New Year events.
