The Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine continues to find out how the icon, presented by the Head of the Presidium of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Milorad Dodik, to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Sergei Lavrov, ended up in Bosnia.
The Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine analyzed the image of the seal on the icon presented by the head of the Presidium of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Milorad Dodik, to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Sergei Lavrov, during an official visit to Sarajevo, and concluded that the icon is the property of the state of Ukraine. This was stated by the Deputy Minister of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine, Svetlana Fomenko, said the official government website.
As Fomenko pointed out, the seal that can be seen in the icon image is the seal of the Odessa Regional Commission for the Protection of Monuments of Material Culture and Nature, which was created in 1926 at the Odessa Historical and Archaeological Museum. and it worked until 1930.
“The fact of the presence of the regional commission seal on the icon indicates that this icon is the property of the state of Ukraine,” the official said.

The Ministry of Culture prepares inquiries to the archive services and museums of Ukraine to receive materials on the activities of the Odessa Regional Commission, information on the cultural values taken into account by the commission, which is necessary to identify the icon. The ministry will also be in contact with law enforcement agencies to find out how the Ukraine icon came to the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The Ministry of Culture recalled that Ukraine and Bosnia are parties to the Convention on Measures to prohibit and prevent the illicit import, export and transfer of property rights over cultural property of November 14, 1970. In accordance with art. 7 of the convention, Bosnia and Herzegovina is obliged to return the icon to Ukraine, if its Ukrainian origin and the fact of illegal export is confirmed.
Lavrov paid an official visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina from December 14-15. Later it became known that the President of the Bosnian Presidium, Milorad Dodik, presented the Russian minister with a golden icon of about 300 years. The media wrote that the icon presumably came to Bosnia from Lugansk, which has been occupied by pro-Russian militants since 2014.
The Ukrainian Embassy sent a note to the Bosnian government demanding to find out how the icon got to Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The Russian Foreign Ministry announced that it would return the icon to the donor to clarify its origin through Interpol.
