In Berlin, Bundestag deputies discussed a Russian court’s decision to arrest opposition leader Alexei Navalny. Representatives for the Greens and the Free Democratic Party of Germany said Nord Stream 2 should stop.
This is reported by the German edition Zdf.de. German Chancellor Heiko Maas, in turn, defended the gas pipeline. “Heiko Maas did not rule out new EU sanctions against Russia in response to the imprisonment of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny. But Maas wants to preserve the controversial Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline,” the publication said.
Green MP Oliver Crisher criticized the words that Nord Stream 2 is presented by the federal government as a private economic project. His colleague Alexander Graf Lambsdorff called friendly relations with Russia “currently impossible”.
“Russia has gone off the path of democracy,” Lambsdorf explained, calling for Nord Stream 2 to stop.
The project is estimated at 9.5 billion euros. It is being implemented by Gazprom in alliance with the European companies Engie, Uniper, OMV, Shell, Wintershall. They pledged to finance Nord Stream 2 in total by 50%, i.e. for 950 million euros each. Gazprom will provide the second half of the funds: 4,750 million euros.
Ukraine, Poland, the Baltic States and the United States criticize the SP-2. In his view, the EU may become dependent on Russian gas. Ukraine also does not want to lose its role as a gas transit country. In this case, you will lose 3 billion in annual revenue. Berlin is committed to guaranteeing transit through Ukraine even after the construction of the gas pipeline.
