A Serbian citizen was trying to import into his country a valuable collection of Ukrainian antiques hidden in the parquet of a truck. This was reported by the press service of the border detachment “Serbskaya Crnya”.

“On the night of December 29, 2020, at the Serbian Crnja border crossing, customs agents, in cooperation with the police, discovered and prevented an attempted smuggling of a rich archaeological collection, with more than 2,000 antiquities from different periods. “says the message.

The archaeological collection was discovered in a truck with Romanian license plates driven by a 46-year-old Serbian citizen. There were pieces of parquet in the car.

When asked by customs officials about the contents of his truck, the driver replied that he was only carrying two bags of candy and the merchandise indicated on the customs documentation.

During a detailed inspection of the car, it was revealed that the cab of the truck and the side toolbox were filled with undeclared antiques from various periods: Bronze Age, Byzantine, Middle Ages. The collection also included archaeological finds from the cultures of the ancient Slavs and Celts.




A collection of Ukrainian antiques will be sent for examination.

Customs officials counted a total of 2,113 items. Of these, the most numerous were pendants, rings, various tools and weapons, a large stone, and several smaller metal figures. Decorative items include bracelets, brooches, hairpins, as well as hairpins, while weapons include many spearheads, arrows, axes, and even maces. Among the everyday objects in the collection there were also various spoons, needles, knives, keys, spurs, belt buckles, buttons and coins.

The driver told customs officials that he was not the owner of the archaeological collection and that he agreed to transport it from Ukraine to Serbia for a small fee. According to him, someone should have contacted him upon arrival in the country.

Given the size and variety of the antique collection, law enforcement officials were unable to determine its value without expert judgment. All articles will be sent for review.

Border guards believe that this shipment is of great historical and archaeological value.

We recall, on February 10 of this year, Galician customs employees detained a Ukrainian woman who was crossing the border with Poland and confiscated more than 100 antiques from her.
