Serbian customs officers found more than 2,000 antiques in a truck driver carrying parquet from Ukraine.
This was reported by the Serbian Customs Office. The incident took place on December 29 at the Serbian border crossing at Crnja.
The truck with Romanian numbers was driven by a 46-year-old Serbian citizen.
When asked by customs officials about the additional cargo, the man reported only two packages of candy.
During a detailed inspection of the car, it was revealed that the cab of the truck and the side toolbox were filled with undeclared antiques from various periods: the Bronze Age, the Byzantine period, the Middle Ages, as well as objects from the ancient Slavs and Celts.
The customs officers counted a total of 2,113 articles, among which the most numerous were pendants, rings and various tools.
Among the ancient weapons there were many arrowheads and spearheads, axes and even some maces.
Of the everyday objects in the collection there were various spoons, needles, knives, keys, spurs, belt buckles, buttons and coins.
All confiscated items were transferred for examination to establish the possible value of the contraband collection.
The driver told law enforcement officials that he had nothing to do with the old finds, as he simply agreed to transport the goods from Ukraine to Serbia for a small fee. Upon reaching the place with him supposedly should have been contacted.
As OBOZREVATEL previously reported, a Bulgarian citizen tried to export a violin made by the Italian master Antonio Stradivari from Ukraine in 1687. In addition to a musical instrument, the smuggler found six old coins, one of which dates from 1780.
