Former representative of the President of Ukraine in Crimea Boris Babin believes that the lack of water in occupied Crimea will limit the resettlement of settlers from the Russian Federation on the peninsula.
In Russian-occupied Crimea, the problem of water shortage is solved by Ancient Egyptian methods. Boris Babin, a former representative of the President of Ukraine in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, told the Observer this in an interview published on December 31.
“Today we see that the main actions in Crimea to find water are reduced to military measures. With the help of its own Ministry of Defense, the military, that is, free labor, is drilling wells. To put it bluntly, the methods of Ancient Egypt. They are not capable of more. ” – said Babin.
He believes that problems with the water supply on the peninsula have arisen due, among other things, to “the artificial resettlement of half a million people in Crimea”, which has increased the burden of communications.
“Then everything will be more or less the same. Regardless of the level of precipitation next year, the reservoirs will not be able to fill to normal levels, because they are critically depleted. This is a challenge. The water shortage will be a chronic phenomenon. However, this it means two positive things to us. ” this is a restriction on the resettlement of colonialists in Crimea. For Russians there will be fewer reasons to come to the Crimea, voluntarily or forcibly. This is the main advantage, “Babin explained.
The second positive moment was called “the reduction of opportunities for the militarization of the peninsula, for the development of military infrastructure, in particular – nuclear”.
“The lack of water stops all their plans,” said the former representative of the president of Ukraine in Crimea.
Ukraine supplied through the Northern Crimean Canal up to 85% of Crimea’s freshwater needs. After the occupation of Crimea by the Russian Federation in the spring of 2014, Kiev stopped the supply of water to the peninsula. In April 2017, the Crimean authorities assured that they had managed to completely overcome this problem, but, as experts told the Krym.Realii newspaper, this information does not correspond to reality. According to media reports, no alternative to the Dnieper water supply has yet been found in Crimea, except for large-scale pumping of groundwater.
In June 2019, Babin said that the invaders were offering bribes to restore the water supply to Crimea.
In September, Sergei Shevchenko, head of the Northern Crimean Canal, said it was technically impossible to supply water from mainland Ukraine to Crimea.
The Chairman of the Budget Committee of the Verkhovna Rada, Servant of the People’s People’s Deputy Yuriy Aristov, told reporters on the Scheme (Radio Svoboda) program, broadcast on January 30, 2020, that the Ukrainian authorities were considering the idea to sell water to Crimea. The representative of the President of Ukraine in Crimea, Anton Korinevich, responded by saying that Ukraine has no intention of resuming water supply to Crimea until the peninsula is vacated.
Ukraine’s Prime Minister Denis Shmygal said that the supply of fresh water from mainland Ukraine to occupied Crimea is only possible in the event of a humanitarian disaster on the peninsula.
