Gennady Kernes, 61, passed away on the night of December 17 at the Berlin Charite clinic, where he was hospitalized on September 16 with coronavirus.

Kernes was buried in the honorary alley of the city cemetery No. 2. His grave is located in front of the graves of the former presidents of the Kharkiv Regional State Administration Alexander Maselsky and Yevgeny Kushnarev. According to police estimates, 110,000 people came to say goodbye to the mayor.
According to the results of the local elections on October 25, Kernes obtained 60.34% of the votes and was declared mayor of Kharkiv without taking the oath. He has served as mayor since 2010.
Now, the functions of the mayor will be temporarily carried out by the secretary of the Kharkiv City Council, Igor Terekhov.
