In the Faroe Islands, after three years of construction, an underwater car tunnel with a roundabout opens, the BBC reported on 4 December..
The underwater tunnels connect the islands of Streima and Eystura with a network of about 11 km. The tunnel is scheduled to open on December 19.
The tunnel network will reduce the travel time between the Faroese capital Torshavn and the town of Runavik from one hour 14 minutes to just 16 minutes.
The lowest point of the tunnel network is 187 meters below sea level. For safety reasons, the steepest slope does not exceed 5%.
A test with emergency services is scheduled for December 17.
The tunnel will be free: a passenger car will have to pay 75 DKK (approx. €12). Season tickets are provided for local residents.
Another tunnel is currently under construction connecting the islands of Sandoy and Streimy.
The world’s first roundabout in an underwater tunnel is a reality in the Faroe Islands. With the roundabout, there will be access to the tunnel from the north and south sides of Skálafjørður Bay.
