“Therefore, for each identified mutation, it is necessary to determine what new characteristics it acquires, important changes occur, or is it just a normal evolution,” he explained.

Brian noted that there are no data so far on the effect of the new SARS-CoV-2 mutation on mortality.

The organization also doubts that the new strain affects the effectiveness of the vaccines.

Briand also confirmed that the current UK lockdown is correct. WHO hopes the restrictions will delay the spread of the new mutation before mass vaccination begins.

Earlier, UK Health Minister Matt Hancock said the situation with the new strain of coronavirus “is out of control,” according to Sky News.

“The new strain of COVID-19 is out of control and people should act as if they already have the virus, especially in the areas of England with the highest levels of restrictions,” he said.

Hancock added that the new strain is spreading too fast, so the government had to act decisively.
