Weekend quarantine begins in Ukraine

The country’s authorities believe that the restrictions imposed over the weekend will help avoid a large-scale quarantine.

In Ukraine, at 0.00 on Saturday November 14, the “weekend quarantine” regime came into effect. It will run until midnight on Monday.

Therefore, on weekends, the work of catering establishments, shopping centers, cinemas and other entertainment establishments is prohibited. Clothing markets and hair salons will also be closed.

The prohibition of holding public events, the work of gyms, fitness centers and swimming pools.

The quarantine will last at least three weeks in the country.

At the same time, during the weekend quarantine period, it is allowed to work:

  • public transport;

  • shops in which more than 60% of the area is dedicated to the sale of food, fuel, medicines, medical products, veterinary medicines or feed;

  • catering establishments to take away or with selective delivery;

  • banks and postal operators;

  • Gas station and service station;

  • medical practice institutions.

The Health Ministry proposed to introduce “weekend quarantine” in the country early in the week. Department head Maxim Stepanov also said that starting Monday, Ukrainian clinics will stop accepting patients for planned operations and will only change to receive urgent patients and treat COVID-19 patients.

The idea of ​​introducing a weekend quarantine was supported by President Vladimir Zelensky.

“A temporary quarantine regime for the weekend, for a few weeks, can help us avoid a hard lockdown. Therefore, we will avoid a large increase in patients and we will have time to prepare the required number of beds,” Zelensky said.

That same day it was learned that he himself had contracted the coronavirus; on November 12 the president was hospitalized.

As of November 13, in Ukraine, according to the Ministry of Health, 11,787 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 were registered. In total, 512 thousand people fell ill during the epidemic in the country. 9,317 patients died.
