US to decide on sanctions against Nord Stream 2 after completion of construction
“Sanctions are just one of many important tools” in the arsenal of the Washington administration, the US State Department said.
The US authorities intend to monitor the implementation of the Nord Stream 2 project and will make a decision on sanctions as necessary. This was announced on Wednesday, February 3, by the spokesman for the US State Department, Ned Price, that the briefing was broadcast on the department’s YouTube channel.
“We will monitor the completion and certification activities of the pipeline and, if carried out, we will decide the applicability of the sanctions,” Price said.
He noted that in this case, sanctions are “just one of many important instruments.”
“We will work more closely with our allies and partners to strengthen Europe’s energy security,” the US State Department spokesman concluded.
Price also reiterated an earlier view by US officials that Nord Stream 2 represented “bad business” for Europe.
The United States actively opposes the project, which imposed sanctions not only against companies directly involved in the construction, but also against companies that provide insurance and certification services to the project.
Previously, German media reported that German Chancellor Angela Merkel and US President Joe Biden discussed the issue of SP-2. It is argued that Washington is ready to begin negotiations on waiver of sanctions against the gas pipeline if Berlin comes up with proposals that alleviate US concerns.
At the same time, the White House was previously informed that Biden considers Nord Stream 2 to be “bad business” for European countries.
