The United States and the Russian Federation cannot agree on the limitation of offensive strategic weapons
The United States proposes to extend the START treaty for one year with a limitation on all nuclear warheads and Putin, without any conditions.
The United States described Russian President Vladimir Putin’s proposal not to extend the Treaty on the Limitation of Strategic Offensive Weapons (START) without any conditions. So the proposal was discussed by the adviser to the president of the United States for national security, Robert O. Brien.
He recalled that the United States offered the Russian Federation to extend the START Treaty for one year, with a limit for all nuclear warheads.
“This would be a victory for both parties, and we believed that the Russians were ready to accept this offer … President Putin’s response today to extend the new START treaty without freezing the nuclear warheads is a failure,” he said.
OʼBrien expressed the hope that Russia will reconsider its position before the “costly arms race” breaks out.
Earlier this week, the United States announced the final condition of START-3: Washington is ready to extend the treaty with Moscow, provided both countries temporarily freeze the size of their nuclear arsenals. In Russia, the US side rejected this proposal, calling it “unacceptable”.
START-3 is an agreement between Russia and the United States on the mutual reduction of the stockpiles of deployed strategic nuclear weapons. Signed on April 8, 2010 and entered into force on February 5, 2011. The contract expires on February 5, 2021.
