The United States submitted a report on additional sanctions against Nord Stream-2
Several companies are exempt from penalties as they reduce their pipeline work, while other companies may be subject to new measures.
The US State Department announced the violation of US sanctions by the Russian pipe laying vessel Fortuna and its owner, KVT-RUS. This indicates the possibility of a new round of US sanctions against the construction of Nord Stream 2, Bloomberg reports.
The report, released Friday night, February 19, also lists other organizations that have been exempted from sanctions because they are scrapping their work on Nord Stream 2.
“It is noteworthy that in the report approved by Congress, there is no German or European organization that is also helping in the construction of the pipeline,” the newspaper writes.
The publication notes that this decision by the United States confirms its intention not to challenge Germany, which supports the construction of the gas pipeline. At the same time, the Biden administration, like the Trump administration before that, opposes the pipeline, calling it a “bad deal” for European energy security.
The State Department report was due Feb.16, but the Biden administration said it needed a little more time to review intelligence and determine which ships, people and other organizations were helping with the pipeline project.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin said about Nord Stream-2 that Russia is under pressure because of Ukraine. They want to force Russia to pay for the West’s geopolitical project in Ukraine and thus block the construction of the gas pipeline, Putin said.
