The United States is concerned about Russia’s money laundering activities and the entry of its warships into Cypriot ports. The United States believes that Russian warships are not conducting humanitarian missions in Syria.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told Cyprus President Nikos Anastasiades about this.
The United States asked the President of Cyprus to take their concerns into account.
“I expressed the concern of the United States about Russia’s money laundering activities and its regular calls at Cypriot ports. We know that all Russian warships calling at Cypriot ports are conducting non-humanitarian missions in Syria, and We ask Cyprus and its president to take our concerns into account, “Pompeo said.
The United States and Cyprus signed a memorandum to establish a Security Center on land, high seas and ports. It will be financed by the United States and built in Cyprus.
We add, previously AFP reported that the EU sanctions against Belarus for electoral fraud, political repression and violence against protesters are being delayed due to the position of Cyprus. At the same time, Brussels wants to speed up this process.
Cyprus is blocking economic sanctions until the EU agrees to similar measures against Turkey in relation to natural gas exploration in the eastern Mediterranean.
