The United States issued a statement on the sixth anniversary of the signing of the Minsk Accords, highlighting that support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity remains unwavering.

The United States has called on Russia to honor its commitments under the Minsk Accords signed six years ago and to withdraw its troops from Ukraine. This is stated in a statement from the United States Embassy in Ukraine, published on September 5 on Facebook.

“On the sixth anniversary of the signing of the Minsk Protocol, we call on Russia to fully comply with its obligations, withdraw from Ukraine the weapons and troops it leads, and return Ukraine to full control over its internationally recognized borders,” the report says.

The embassy also assured that the support of the United States to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine “remains unwavering.”

In 2014, immediately after the annexation of Crimea, Russia launched an armed aggression in eastern Ukraine. The fighting is between the Armed Forces of Ukraine, on the one hand, and the Russian army and the Russian-backed militants who control parts of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions, on the other. The Russian Federation does not officially recognize its invasion of Ukraine, despite the facts and evidence presented by Ukraine.

Negotiations on the settlement of the conflict are taking place in the formats of Minsk (Ukraine – Russia – Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe) and Normandy (Ukraine – Russia – Germany – France).

On September 5, 2014, a trilateral contact group composed of representatives of Ukraine, Russia and the OSCE approved 12 points of the Minsk agreements. They were also signed by then-DPR leaders and LPR militants. On February 12, 2015, a set of measures for the implementation of the Minsk Accords was approved. They provide for a ceasefire, withdrawal of heavy weapons, monitoring of international observers, holding local elections in accordance with Ukrainian law, amnesty for parties to the conflict, release and exchange of prisoners, access to humanitarian missions to help those in need, return of control over the border with Ukraine, constitutional reform in Ukraine. in terms of decentralization.
