The UN General Assembly adopted an enhanced resolution on the actions of the Russian Federation in Crimea

Ukraine’s resolution on the human rights situation in the annexed Crimea confirms the non-recognition of the annexation of the peninsula by the international community.

The UN General Assembly adopted a strengthened resolution on Ukraine Situation with human rights in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol, Ukraine. This was reported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine on Wednesday, December 16.

“The resolution clearly defines the illegitimacy of the organs and officials of the Russian Federation in Crimea in the context of strengthening the international policy of non-recognition of the attempted annexation of Crimea.

In particular, the document states that Russia does not comply with international obligations in the field of human rights and international humanitarian law. The level of observance of human rights in Crimea after its occupation by Russia has decreased significantly also because the Russian Federation is party to fewer relevant international treaties than Ukraine.

Russia is also using the COVID-19 pandemic to introduce unjustified restrictive measures on the peninsula, increasing repression against the population, in particular by involving the FSB.

“It is important that the UN General Assembly does not side with the issue of the release of illegally detained Ukrainian citizens. Taking into account the release in December 2019 and April 2020 of people held by the occupying state in Donbass, the resolution emphasizes the need to release all Ukrainian political prisoners in the Kremlin, mentioning their names Emira-Usein Kuku and Server Mustafayev, “added the Foreign Ministry.

Furthermore, for the first time, the term “citizen journalists” was included in the resolution, which is an important result of the ongoing campaign by the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to protect journalists and activists working under occupation. The resolution describes in detail the subversive economic activities of the Russian Federation, depleting the natural resources of the peninsula. The resolution acknowledges the problem that Russia blocks the access of Crimean residents to the Ukrainian educational system and the violation of the religious rights of the local population.

Once again, Russia was asked to provide full and unhindered access to Crimea for international follow-up missions, in particular the United Nations Human Rights Follow-up Mission in Ukraine and the OSCE SMM.

We will recall that previously the EU extended sanctions against the Russian Federation for Crimea. Economic sanctions for Russia’s military aggression will be extended for another six months, until August 2021.

It was also reported that the Crimean platform concept was presented to the European Union. Ukraine and the EU discussed the annexation of Crimea and also expressed concern about human rights violations and the militarization of the peninsula.
