The UK government announced on December 22 that it is expanding its program to attract foreign workers to harvest and pack fruits and vegetables for a year. Also in 2021, the number of visas for such workers will triple, from 10,000 to 30,000.
This is reported on the UK government portal.
In 2019, a pilot program for hiring seasonal workers was launched. The authorities have extended it and extended it for another year: there are 30,000 visas available for those who wish to come to work on farms in the UK for up to six months. This decision stems from Britain’s exit from the EU and the need for additional seasonal labor in Scotland to support the local rural economy.
Environment Minister George Eustis said the measures announced today will provide farmers with labor from Britain and abroad to harvest the 2021 crop and feed the nation.
The seasonal worker pilot project was designed to test the effectiveness of the country’s immigration system in supporting UK producers during peak periods, while ensuring strict immigration controls and ensuring the well-being of migrant workers.
The UK government has long assisted farmers with seasonal workers. After the end of World War II, similar programs for seasonal agricultural workers attracted many migrant workers to the UK.
In the meantime, reaching the UK remains problematic: Due to a new strain of coronavirus detected there, the European Union announced the closure of borders with the country.
Ukraine has not yet stopped the flights with Foggy Albion, but it does not exclude that possibility.
