For national team matches during the COVID-19 pandemic, UEFA has developed a protocol that involves rigorous testing of players to ensure that all matches are played as planned.
However, local authorities are authorized to send groups of players or the entire team to quarantine if tests before the game show a positive result for someone. Am
UEFA notes that due to the tight schedule, some Nations League matches will not be rescheduled (we are talking about the group stage). Since the match Switzerland – Ukraine would end the group stage of the League of Nations, it could belong to this category.
If the match cannot be rescheduled, what action does UEFA protocol require?
1. “If a group of players or an entire team is forced into quarantine or self-isolation, a game can be played if the team has 13 players (and at least one goalkeeper) available.”
UEFA clarifies that they (the players) do not have to be announced before. The main thing is that they have the right to represent the national team or youth teams, in accordance with the FIFA regulations and to be tested negative according to UEFA protocol.
Norway recently found itself in a similar situation after local authorities banned it from away games against Romania and Austria. The fate of the Romania-Norway match will be decided by UEFA, and the Norwegians will play Austria with a quickly assembled reserve team.
2. “If the national federation cannot present the minimum number of players for the match (13, including a goalkeeper), the match, if possible, will be postponed by the UEFA administration, which has the right to select a stadium in territory neutral if necessary. The expenses of the match will be borne by the organizing team ”. (i.e. Switzerland – ed.)
3. “If a match cannot be rescheduled, UEFA’s disciplinary and ethical body will decide. The National Association, which is responsible for the failure of the match, will receive a defeat, but if UEFA decides that neither association is to blame, no technical defeat will be awarded. In this case, the outcome of the game will be determined by a tie (1: 0 win, 0: 1 loss, or 0: 0 tie). ”
It can be assumed that if the Ukrainian team for tomorrow can organize a new team with a new coaching staff, the match will take place, because November 18 is reserved for the teams. It is hardly possible to postpone the game for another day, as the next international break is provided only in March, when other tournaments will begin. In this case, the fate of the match will be determined by UEFA.
