On Tuesday, September 1, Belarus Solidarity Day is celebrated, students and several companies in the country are on strike and harsh arrests have begun again.
A large-scale strike was planned for September 1 in Belarus.
“Let no one work on this day. We call on everyone to show solidarity and stop work, ”said a message on one of the opposition Telegram channels in Belarus.
The participation of the students who attended the school on September 1 added special weight to the protests.
Correspondent.net continues to monitor the progress of actions in a neighboring country.
Students speech
Students picketed near their universities and several dozen people marched down Independence Avenue to the building of the Belarusian Ministry of Education.
In the Plaza de la Victoria, anti-riot militiamen blocked the passage of the protesters. The security forces detained about 10 people, after which the rest of the students fled.
At the same time, student protests and processions continue in other districts of Minsk. Columns of students marched through Gorky Park, Independence Avenue, Yakub Kolas, Kozlov, Yanka Kupala, Zybitskaya and Nemiga streets.
As a result, the security officers organized a real demonstration for the students all over Minsk. It is already known that at least 16 students were arrested.
Employee support
Solidarity Day was also supported by the Minsk workers: builders took to the streets and today a white-red-white national flag flies over many companies in Minsk.
The Belarusian High-Tech Park (HTP) and Minsk’s CHPP-4 are also on strike.
A split in the opposition?
The headquarters of presidential candidate Viktor Babariko, who was detained even before the elections and was not allowed to vote, announced the creation of the Together party on August 31, releasing a video with appeals from Viktor Babariko himself and the head of the headquarters Maria Kolesnikova.
Babariko’s appeal was registered even before his arrest, and in it he stated that “we could not win the elections”, and called the main objective of the new constitutional reform of the party.
Not all opponents liked those words. Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, Alexander Lukashenko’s rival in the presidential elections in Belarus, said she views positively the initiative of Viktor Babariko’s headquarters to register his political party. At the same time, Tikhanovskaya added, he heard two statements in the statement from Babariko headquarters, with which he does not fully agree.
“First, I totally disagree with the claim that we cannot win the elections. Everyone knows that this is not the case. We won, but they are trying to steal our victory from us. That’s why people went to mass protests, that’s why strikes started, “Tikhanovskaya said in a statement.
“Secondly, I do not agree that the first task we face is constitutional reform. This goal setting does not meet the demands of the Belarusian people and seems ambiguous, as today Lukashenka is trying to delay his departure, speaking of incomprehensible constitutional reform in an indefinite period, “said Tikhanovskaya.
He added that the intention to request the registration of a party “means the will to replace the issue of a change of power with the willingness to request sanctions from the authorities to create a party.”
“I understand that Viktor Babariko wrote his appeal prior to his arrest, but the authors of the statement must take a responsible approach in making political decisions,” Tikhanovskaya summarized.
Plans for constitutional reform were also discussed by Valeriy Tsepkalo, another candidate not admitted to the elections.
“On the Constitution and the negotiations. The agenda is to eliminate Lukashenka. Point. In no case should he be allowed to speak and hold a referendum on the constitution, ”Tsepkalo wrote on his telegram channel.
As a result, the Babariko headquarters said it agreed with Tikhanovskaya that her election victory had been stolen and that Lukashenka’s resignation should be demanded. The headquarters also made it clear that it would not give up the goal of initiating a change in the Constitution through a referendum, which Babariko expressed before his arrest.
Interestingly, it is Lukashenka who is actively talking about changing the Constitution, so such statements from Babariko headquarters seem like an act of play with the authorities.
Dad on his own wave
As the students protest and the security forces chase them, Lukashenka continues to speak about how things will soon calm down.
On September 1, Lukashenka said he was striving on a single issue: he wants to protect Belarus, which he raised “from ruins and ashes,” and he seeks to prevent the country, which he “carved on the ruins of an empire,” from being cut off. in pieces. Once again he stressed that he does not cling to power with “blue fingers.”
