The head of the Security Service, Ivan Bakanov, presented a proposal to the National Security and Defense Council to extend the ban on Russian social networks “VKontakte” and “Classmates” for another three years.
“Faces in countries with a sustainable democracy are equal to weapons of mass destruction. There is an ongoing hybrid war against Ukraine, and we continue to resist information attacks by the Russian Federation. So, in the continuation of the sanctions makes sense: this will protect our citizens from counterfeiting and tampering, and consequently preserve security. ” the state in general, “said Bakanov.
SBU cyber specialists have calculated that since the ban was imposed, the Ukrainian audience has been reduced by three times.
- “Marasm” and “FatGir” are Ukrainians about VKontakte ban
- It all fell apart: how Ukrainians lived a year without VK
The agency added that in the past three years, nearly 100 criminal cases have been opened against owners and managers of anti-Ukrainian communities on prohibited social media:
“They all have signs of a crime: invasion of Ukraine’s territorial integrity and inviolability, actions aimed at forcibly disrupting constitutional order or taking over state power, as well as creating terrorist groups,” the SBU said.
In the spring of 2017, before the introduction of the ban, “VKontakte” and “Classmates” were at the top of the most visited sites in Ukraine.
As of March 2020, according to Kantar, both social networks are not among the 25 most popular online resources.
However, some users continue to use Vkontakte and Classmates, even though they are prohibited, using VPN services.
Other resources that were also banned in 2017 include Mail.ru, Yandex, and the Kaspersky Lab site.
