The Russian language in Moldova again received a special status

The Parliament of Moldova finally restored a special status to the Russian language. The law was approved at the initiative of supporters of the current president, Igor Dodon, who will soon relinquish office to Maya Sandu.

It is reported by the local newscast.

The controversial law on the status of the Russian language is reported to have passed on second reading. According to the document, citizens will be able to submit a request in Russian to state authorities, government agencies, companies and organizations and consequently receive answers in the language of their appeal.

In addition, officials were obliged to provide translation of documents into Russian at the request of citizens. On the other hand, it is observed that the heads of state authorities, state and local administrations, public associations, as well as companies of institutions and organizations are responsible for the violation of this law.

It should be noted that in 2018 the Russian language in Moldova lost this status after the Constitutional Court declared the existing law “On the operation of languages on the territory of the MSSR” obsolete.

Experts believe that the implementation of the law on the status of the Russian language in Moldova will not encourage national minorities to study the Romanian language. There is also a possible risk of conflict between ethnic groups.

Let us remind you that former President Igor Dodon promised to raise the status of the Russian language in Moldova before the inauguration of Maya Sandu.

In early December, the Moldovan parliament approved the draft law on the status of the Russian language at first reading and agreed to the return of Russian television.
