Today, October 2, in Nizhny Novgorod, KozaPress editor-in-chief Irina Slavina set herself on fire in front of the Interior Ministry building. She died instantly from burns; the ambulance doctors who arrived could not save her.
This is reported by the Russian telegram channels Baza and 112. The police confirm the fact of the self-immolation.
The journalist’s last post on Facebook was published literally an hour ago: “I ask you to blame the Russian Federation for my death.”
Yesterday, October 1, Slavina announced that a search had been made at her home. “We were looking for brochures, flyers, stories from Open Russia, possibly an icon with the face of Mikhail Khodorkovsky.”
Open Russia is a public organization founded by Mikhail Khodorkovsky. In Russian cities, criminal cases are brought against members of the structure for participating in an organization recognized as “undesirable” in Russia. In the Russian Federation, access to the “Open Russia” website is blocked.
In March 2019, Khodorkovsky announced the liquidation of the Open Russia opposition movement. The decision was made “to protect the activists of the movement.”
