Russia will intervene if Azerbaijan threatens the Syunik region in Armenia. Residents of the region fear that the deployment of new combat posts in Azerbaijan following the transfer of part of the Nagorno-Karabakh lands to Baku control threatens their security.

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan declared this on the air of the Public Television of Armenia.

Now the parties are discussing border issues on 20 parcels.

“The most important issue is security. As a result of the actions on the border, the war in Syunik was suppressed. Not only today, but in general, since we are now positioned so that in the event of an invasion against Syunik, not only the armed forces of Armenia but also Russia intervene. This was done just for this, “said Pashinyan.

In the Syunik region, protests are taking place over an agreement to end the war in Nagorno-Karabakh, which involves the transfer of part of the land to Azerbaijan. On December 21, protesters thwarted Pashinyan’s visit by blocking the road. Previously, the Azerbaijani positions were located 70 and 100 km from the settlements in the region, but after the agreement, the border is established in meters from the settlements.

As RBC-Ukraine reported, on November 10 an agreement was reached on a cease-fire in Nagorno-Karabakh and the introduction of Russian troops into the region. At the same time, Ukraine issued a statement that Russia has no reason to call in the military who were sent to the Nagorno Karabakh peacekeepers.
