The question of historical memory between Ukraine and Poland has been completely eliminated, – Zelensky

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, expressed his satisfaction that during the conversation with the President of Poland, Andrzej Duda, they were very open in discussing issues of historical memory. According to him, in the historical aspect of bilateral relations between Ukraine and Poland, the question of historical memory has been completely eliminated.

Zelensky said this in a joint interview with Duda with Ukrainian and Polish journalists, an excerpt of which was posted on the president’s website.

“We must be realistic, without sentimentality. At our level, we agreed that we will go through all these issues, because we live side by side, we are neighbors and we will be neighbors forever,” he said.

Zelensky pointed out that the issue of historical memory should be decided by historians, professionals, and not politicians.

“That is why it is important that today, as a political issue, the issue of historical memory has been completely eliminated. This is important. There should be no disputes between our countries in the future,” he said.

Note that Ukraine and Poland have different views on the events of 1943-1945 in Volyn and in eastern Galicia, the role of the UPA and OUN in the murder of Polish and Ukrainian civilians.

In Poland, these crimes are accused of “Ukrainian nationalists”, members of the OUN and UPA, Ukrainian historians blame both sides.

We recall, Andrzej Duda arrived on Saturday October 11 on a working visit to Ukraine, and on October 13 he met with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky.

During the visit, Duda called for the extension of the “Crimean” sanctions against Russia.

It was also reported that the presidents of Ukraine and Poland issued a joint statement.
