Pope Francis has denied an audience with United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. The Vatican believes that the US authorities want to involve the Catholic Church in the electoral campaign.
Reported by Reuters.
Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin pointed out that the Pope does not meet politicians during the pre-election period.
“Yes, Pompeo has submitted an application. But the Pope has already clearly said that he does not accept politicians during the pre-election period. This is the reason for the refusal,” Parolin said.
Parolin also suggested that Pompeo wanted to involve the church in the campaign when he criticized the Vatican’s deal with China on the pope’s ability to influence the appointment of Chinese bishops.
“Some believe that these statements were primarily for internal political use. I have no evidence for this, but of course this is one of the views,” Parolin said.
Earlier, the Pope asked Yerevan and Baku to resolve the conflict without the use of force.
The first debate between Donald Trump and Joe Biden took place yesterday in the United States. In them, the candidates addressed the issues of the fight against the coronavirus and racial protests.
