The prosecutor for the German city of Trier, Peter Fritzen, said that on December 2, a 51-year-old man, who was arrested for striking a group of pedestrians, plans to opt for a preventive measure.
The number of victims as a result of an SUV that hit a crowd of pedestrians in the German city of Trier increased to five, 14 people were injured. Prosecutor Peter Fritzen said this in a briefing on December 1, writes the German newspaper Bild.
Militiamen confirmed: a nine-month-old boy was the victim of the incident, his mother is in the hospital. Additionally, the collision killed a 73-, 52- and 25-year-old woman, as well as a 45-year-old man, all of whom were Trier residents.
The prosecutor did not rule out that the driver of the silver Land Rover has a mental illness. He was found to have 1.4 ppm of alcohol in his blood. Law enforcement officers did not notice any signs of political undertone in the incident, but the motivation of the 51-year-old who entered the crowd is still unknown.
According to Fritzen, on December 2, the driver will opt for a preventive measure.
The Land Rover driver was detained several minutes after the incident. He is a German citizen. According to eyewitnesses, the man drove towards the crowd of passersby at a speed of 70-80 km / h, did not signal or attempt to stop. The incident took place in the city center on the afternoon of December 1.
