There are more than 1,5 thousand prisoners sentenced to life imprisonment in Ukraine
More than 1,500 people are serving life sentences in Ukraine’s prisons and their number continues to rise, said the head of the Justice Ministry.
Justice Minister Denis Malyuska said that in Ukraine more than 1,500 people are serving life sentences. According to him, the maintenance of each of them costs the treasury 10 thousand hryvnia per month. On Sunday, November 1, he stated this in an interview with Radio Liberty.
“We even have more than 1,500” life sentences “in Ukraine. The maintenance of each of them is at least 10,000 hryvnias per month. We feed them, we protect them, we provide them with accommodation. I understand that this is all of poor quality, but However, it is being financed and resources are being spent. And this does not happen in 10 years, not in 20 years, but until a person dies. Therefore, their number is constantly increasing, “said the minister.
Malyuska believes that people serving a life sentence must necessarily participate in work activities in order to partially support themselves.
“If someone thinks they shouldn’t work, but should look at the ceiling and ‘enjoy life’, and then die at some point in old age, then they are wrong,” Malyuska said.
Let us remind you that on July 24, the Minister of Justice, Denis Malyuska, announced a new service of the Ministry of Justice: a gift certificate for a prison cell paid with better conditions.
