The Ministry of Justice announced a new type of punishment for criminals

An alternative punishment for criminals will appear in Ukraine instead of imprisonment. This will significantly reduce the costs of the prison system.

A new type of punishment for offenders will appear in Ukraine: probation supervision. It will apply in cases where the court now imposes restriction of liberty or arrest as punishment. This category are misdemeanors. The corresponding bill has already been drafted by the Justice Ministry, said Justice Minister Denis Malyuska.

“With the bill, we propose to introduce a new type of punishment: the supervision of probation. It is assumed that probation will be applied both as a main and an additional punishment. First of all, it is designed for those cases where the court imposes restrictions on liberty or arrest as punishment. ” , – stressed Malyuska.

According to him, the introduction of a probationary period will reduce the costs of the prison system. The minister added that a prisoner in prison costs taxpayers more than 10,000 UAH per month. And the cost of probation will be about 900 hryvnia. With such a person, the state works in freedom, no money is spent on him for maintenance, food, public services.

“Now the system of execution of sentences in Ukraine is focused on isolating a person, on the physical prevention of committing a second crime within a certain period. Our task is to change the focus of the system of execution of criminal sentences and ensure safety of society, “said the Minister of Justice.

Before that, the Ministry of Justice was informed how many people are being held in prisons and pre-trial detention centers.

It was also reported that Malyuska showed a free cell from the remand center after the repairs. According to him, the camera was repaired with money received from paid camera rentals.
