The Ministry of Health is preparing “protocols of choice” of patients for doctors to treat
The worst of the four scenarios foresees an increase in the daily increase in the number of cases to 20 thousand per day. Then doctors will have to choose which of the patients to save.
The Ministry of Health has developed action plans for four scenarios of spread of COVID-19 in Ukraine. The worst of them involves more than 20 thousand patients per day. This was announced during a briefing on Friday October 23 by Health Minister Maxim Stepanov.
He said that the Ministry of Health has developed different scenarios for the development of events, including scenarios for a sharp increase in the number of patients and the response of the medical system.
“When we talk about the health system response, we clearly understand that the number of beds we can allocate for the treatment of COVID-19 patients is limited to 52 thousand. Because our other illnesses did not take vacations,” Stepanov said.
He explained that the capacity of the medical system to provide care is evaluated based on the number of cases per day, from which the number (percentage) of those who can be hospitalized is subtracted.
Stepanov also spoke about the four “levels” of the spread of the disease.
The first level is the one that Ukraine now has, up to eight thousand patients a day. At this level, authorities are increasing the number of hospital beds and the capacity of the medical system to treat patients.
The second level: when the daily growth of patients will increase to 10 thousand people. Then the Ministry of Health plans to introduce almost all 52 thousand beds and may start to implement mobile hospitals in some regions.
The third level is up to 15 thousand new patients per day. On it, the Ministry of Health will be forced to “introduce an almost complete list of restrictions, which the red zone provides, throughout the country.”
In this case, the deployment of mobile hospitals, the full mobilization of doctors and medical workers, even interns, is possible.
The fourth level is when the number of patients can reach 20 thousand per day, and the occupation of the “bottom of the bed” can reach 100%.
According to Stepanov, in this case, the Ministry of Health will be forced to “introduce the so-called election protocols”, when the doctor determines which of the patients to save.
At the same time, the head of the Ministry of Health emphasized that the number of medical workers is limited, they cannot be “imported” from somewhere in a critical situation.
By the way, in France today more than 41 thousand infections were announced per day.
In Ukraine, this figure has been updating the anti-registration for several days, and today it has reached 7.5 thousand.
