The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has prohibited the illegally elected president of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, and his son Viktor, from participating in all the organization’s events, including the Olympics.
As reported on the official IOC website, this ban also applies to all leadership of the country’s National Olympic Committee (NOC). The sanctions will be in effect until further instructions or until the election of the new leadership of the NOC of Belarus, which is scheduled for February 2021.
In addition, the IOC will suspend all financial payments intended for the country’s National Olympic Committee, except for funds intended to prepare Belarusian athletes for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo and the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. However, it is noted that the money will be paid directly to the athletes without the participation of the NOC of Belarus.
The International Olympic Committee also suspended all negotiations on the possible holding of competitions under the auspices of the organization on the territory of the state.
As reported by OBOZREVATEL, The protests in Belarus began after the “victory” of Alyaksandr Lukashenka in the country’s presidential elections, who, according to his results, allegedly obtained 80% of the votes. People took to the streets in droves and faced stiff resistance from the security forces, who began to beat and arrest the protesters.
Belarusian athletes, particularly the Olympic medalists, demanded that the elections in the country be declared invalid.
