The ICC prepared a report on Ukraine
The International Criminal Court has every reason to initiate proceedings on the events in Crimea and Donbass related to the aggression of the Russian Federation.
The Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court in The Hague has completed a preliminary analysis of the situation in Ukraine, after which a new report was published on Monday 14 December.
According to the document, the ICC found that crimes such as deportation, murder, torture, kidnapping, compulsion to serve in the army of the occupying country and others were committed in Crimea before and during the occupation by Russia.
At the same time, in Donbas, the Prosecutor’s Office of the Court registered premeditated murders, attacks against civilian objects, rapes and other forms of sexual violence.
In this sense, according to the report, the ICC has every reason to initiate proceedings on these events, especially since the national investigative bodies of Ukraine and Russia are inactive or cannot punish those responsible.
“The Office of the Prosecutor has received responses from Ukraine on national procedures, but has not received a response to inquiries sent to the Russian Federation,” the report says.
It is noted that further action will be taken on the Ukraine issue after the election of a new ICC prosecutor and the Office looks forward to the full support of all stakeholders.
As reported, ICC prosecutor Fatou Bensouda completed the study of materials on the situation in Ukraine related to the aggression by the Russian Federation and is launching an investigation into the case.
In this regard, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine said that Kiev hopes to bring to justice those responsible for war crimes in Ukraine, which they committed after February 20, 2014.
