The reason for the sinking of a dry cargo ship with Ukrainian crew in the Black Sea could be weather conditions and non-compliance with the rules for the safe operation of the ship. This was stated by the head of the State Service for Maritime and River Transport, Andrei Glazkov.

Dry cargo ship “Volgo Balt 179” on the night of March 11 It broke in a wave off the coast of Romania, around 5 a.m. the ship gave an SOS signal and sank two hours later. The head of the State Sea and River Transport Service of Ukraine Andriy Glazkov spoke about this in an interview with the Public.

“The first reason for this incident is the difficult weather conditions. And unfortunately, the captain of the ship and the shipping company did not comply with the rules for the safe operation of the ship. He had to move 20 miles from the coast with a wave height of no more than 3 meters. According to my information, the wave height was 4 meters and they were moving in the direction from Crimea to Constanta. That is, they were not keeping their distance, “said Glazkov.

He stressed that the 4 meter high waves are a real storm.

According to Glazkov, the ship was old.

“It is impossible for such a ship to be in such an area under such conditions. It is very dangerous,” stressed the head of public administration.

Glazkov said the dry freighter was designed to navigate rivers and at sea. It has limitations due to design characteristics: 20 miles from shore and a wave height of 3 meters.

“These ships enter the ports of the Sea of Azov, as well as the ports of the Dnieper and the Danube. To enter them, so-called flat-bottom ships are needed. They carry cargo in river ports and move by sea. he added. explained.

The dry cargo ship Volgo Balt 179 with Ukrainian crew, which was sailing from the Russian city of Rostov-on-Don to the Romanian port of Constance, sank about 70 nautical miles (about 130 km) from its destination.

The ship’s crew consisted of 13 Ukrainian sailors, two died and one person disappeared.

The ship was built in 1973 and recently flew under the Comoros flag.
